I received a great phone call this week. My sister-in-law is going to a convention in Wisconsin in October and she asked if we'd like to come along! So, we'll be going on another trip. Yeah!
We'll be flying to Kansas City and then driving up. We have several days to get to Wisconsin and several days to get home so we'll be making several stops. Right now our plans are to stop in Hannibal, MO and to spend some time in Wisconsin including Door County. We might stop by Chicago which we LOVED last fall, or we might just try some new spots.
All together, we'll probably be driving through portions of Kansas, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri. If you've got any great ideas for places to visit, particularly for Wisconsin (near Green Bay, Milwaukee, Madison, and Door County) and/or Iowa (we'll drive through Iowa City, Des Moines, Dubuque & Cedar Rapids), please let me know! Or, we could drive back through Illinois and hit cities like Peoria and Springfield. Thanks for your help!

There aren't many places in Cedar Rapids left to visit since the flood, unfortunately. The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art is open and Brucemore is open too. I also think The History Center is open too. But on your way to Dubuque you could stop at The Field of Dreams, if your kids have seen the movie they might like that. There is a water park and hotel in Dubuque as well as an aquarium that is fun. Ledges State Park is cool, that is just outside Ames. Blank Park Zoo, Living History Farms and the Botanical Gardens in Des Moines is fun. There is a Matchstick Museum called Matchstick Marvels in Gladbrook that is fun. You could go to the Amanas for a German influence or Kalona for an Amish influence. (Kalona is where we stock up on all our spices and bulk items) The Hoover Museum in West Branch on Interstate 80 is great if you are studying the presidents. I think they have Caroline Kennedy's doll collection there right now as well as a model of the White House. And The Boone Scenic Valley Railway is always fun. Check on train/ticket times. They have some neat packages. I hope this helps ya a bit. I know there are many areas of interest and fun things to do here in Iowa that I am forgetting but if I think of something too great to miss I will let you know.
Hmm. None of those interstates run through Atlanta do they? Maybe next time :-)
Last time I went through those areas I wasn't old enough to drive. But I'm sure that you'll find something really interesting to do, and then we can vicariously learn along with you. I can't wait!
We haven't been there yet, but we have heard that the zoo in Madison is terrific (it is a smaller zoo and free). The Milwaukee Zoo is terrific. We are Brookfield Zoo (in Illinois) members and that is also first rate. (We like zoos.)
