Who do you think you are?

"Who Do You Think You Are?" is a new series that will air on Friday, March 5th. This series follows 7 celebrities on a quest to discover their pasts. I am looking forward to it (but, of course, I haven't watched it yet so please judge this series for yourself!)

I started doing genealogy about 13 years ago with the help of my Great Aunt Beulah. She was born in 1923 and passed away a little over a year ago. For decades, she researched our family the "old fashioned way", i.e. without a computer. I am grateful for how she taught me to research and the wonderful research she passed along to me.

Next school year, I plan on teaching a genealogy class to 4th-6th graders. I hope to pass along my love of learning about the past of our own families. Hopefully, some of these children will uncover records that will be passed down for many generations.

Here's a brief preview of the series which starts a week from Friday. I'm excited to see what this series will bring...and see who it inspires to look into their own family heritage!

  1. I'm passionate about genealogy as well. In fact, I'm working on documenting the primary sources for all my ancestors so that I can earn my Cultural Skills-Genealogy pin from Sons of Norway. It's a long process but so rewarding!

I hadn't heard about the new series - I'll be certain to check it out!

  5. I saw an episode in the wee hours this morning while feeding the baby. It was the one with Yo Yo Ma. They did an amazing job. I would love to trace back my roots my day. I know they have DNA testing now that is amazingly specific.

  6. Yes, I thought this show looked interesting also. I'll definitely watch at least the first one.
I've been curious about my genealogy, but not enough to do anything about it. It just seems like such an overwhelming project. Maybe when I retire....LOL!

  7. I love genealogy too. I have been able to track down cousins in England, Ireland and New Zealand and we correspond regularly. It all started with an address in my grandmother's papers that was over 65 years old!!!

This show has been on British TV since 2004. I found a set of Youtube episodes on David Tennant that were fun (just go to youtube and search for the title of the show and his name). They go into the history of "The Clearings" in Scotland and "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland. You might like them given your recent trip.

I would definitely be interested in hearing what you plan on doing for your class.
    Thanks,
    Sarah
